Altaïr ibn-La’Ahad,Ezio Auditore da Firenze and Desmond Miles

Those are the current characters we have played as in my personal favorite franchise, Assassin’s Creed. I have loved many games in our modern age, Fallout 3, Red Dead Redemption, No More Heroes, etc. However none of those games are as good, in my opinion, as what Assassin’s Creed currently is.

This franchise began following the wonderful Altaïr ibn-La’Ahad, an assassin born in 1165 who becomes the Master Assassin of his time. His name, and the locales he travels through, implies a Middle Eastern origin. He is a mostly no-nonsense man and gets his job done the best he can.

Ezio Auditore da Firenze is an Italian nobleman, dragged into the assassin’s order after his father and siblings are hanged in front of him. Ezio goes from a cocky young man out for revenge, to the head of the Italian order of Assassins.

Desmond Miles is the descendant of both Altaïr and Ezio and he relives their lives through the Animus technology. He works with a group of modern day Assassins in the year 2012 as they fight to stop the modern day Templars from finding every artifact of Eden. By the end of Altaïr’s story, Desmond has inherited and is able the use the Eagle vision that Altaïr was able to use. This demonstrates how Desmond inherits the traits of his ancestors through use of the Animus. During Ezio’s story, Desmond finds himself reliving a memory of Altaïr without the use of the Animus meaning that he is connecting with his family history on a level that could not have been seen. As Desmond breaks from Animus use, he finds he has inherited every ability of Ezio, from his parkour to his ability to use hidden blades. Desmond becomes the Assassin that his ancestors were and he is being trained for the inevitable battle between Templars and Assassins.

And that just sounds fucking epic.

One of my favorite parts of this series is that it isn’t even about the character you spend 99% of the time playing as. The series is about Desmond and what he is going through to stop the Templars. The entire series is leading to a modern day showdown between Assassins and Templars. Desmond is experiencing strong bleeding effects as he is able to do everything Ezio could, he has Eagle Vision and whatever else happened in Brotherhood. I unfortunately haven’t had a chance to play it yet.

The point is that Ubisoft has crafted a beautiful world full of things that are simply amazing and well thought out. The mysterious subject 16, whose secret in the glyphs was key to the storyline, shows that the Assassins are special, moreso than just by ancestry. Subject 16 is directly related to Adam and Eve of biblical fame who are seen running with The Apple, which gives humans many powers they would not otherwise.

The story is full of hundreds of things going on at any given point and it’s all so wonderful and amazing. A race that is essentially “living gods” and humans mated to create Assassins who have special powers that humans do not, Assassins are meant to protect the world from being destroyed, Desmond is the key to saving the world thanks to his genetics, the Assassins are spread throughout the world and so much more. The story is so amazingly crafted and the very concept of Assassin in this series is breathtaking in its own right.

I personally believe that the final Assassin’s Creed game, likely number 3 as it takes place in the year 2012, will be the best game in the ten years in which it is released. It will be a masterpiece of a videogame and I will be in love with it. Ubisoft is going to make it great and there are so many directions it can be taken. It is no secret that Assassin’s Orders are found throughout the world and the comics show Assassins from countries we have not played in. Just like the Templars, the Assassins are a global thing meaning that we only know a small portion of it all. Desmond may be the Assassin we are playing as, but there are thousands more out there. Though the men and women that Desmond is currently working with may not have the genetics of a true Assassin, they are definitely Assassins. The final Assassin’s Creed could be a global hunt for the last Artifact of Eden or even for the garden of Eden itself. Desmond must find Eve which implies that she exists in some form.

The last Assassin’s Creed could be a global unification of the Assassins fighting Templars off at every turn helping Desmond find Eve and the artifacts of Eden. Desmond is key but Assassins are definitively a special brand of human. They are a mix between Those Who Came Before and Humans giving them special abilities and connecting every Assassin to a similar origin. Desmond and Subject 16 are both related to Ezio and Altaïr and I’m sure hundreds more are as well. Desmond has always known of the Assassins and the Templars but now he’s been thrown into their world again and he is The Key to the survival of the world.

I am personally in love with this series because I think it’s wonderfully crafted and the single best new series in recent years. I love the character of Ezio and his story was wonderfully crafted. Desmond’s persona and his history is beautifully done and seeing a protagonist that is slowly going insane and still must save the world is a groundbreaking concept in my idea. The intertwining of history with fiction and games is fantastic and I simply cannot describe this series in its entirety. It’s fun, it’s great and each game improves. The second game fixed everything that was wrong with the first, Brotherhood is said to have fixed the combat and the multiplayer looks disturbingly addictive and the final one brings everything we’ve worked for into modern day. Climbing the Taj Mahal and the Burj Dubai would be the greatest thing in history.

The Assassin’s Creed series is a masterpiece and I cannot wait to shed tears of joy when the series comes to a close and this story is said and done.

Changes

I’m gonna talk about something that the industry, or certain parts, seem to be all over right now. Changes

Now I’m going to make that a rather broad word and  I’ll cover a few areas: Reboots, General Change to a Game/Franchise and Experimentation.

Let’s start with the first, Reboots. Certain franchises are trying to go new directions with how they are handled. First and foremost is Castlevania. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow released recently for the PS3 and Xbox 360. The game holds much in similar to God of War in terms of the general fighting mechanics, holds boss battles to the scale of Shadow of the Colossus, and has a good amount of puzzles as well. All in all it’s a great game with some good mechanics going for it. Now all the series has to do is feel like Castlevania. The game is only a Castlevania game in name and universe but otherwise it’s another pretty action game that brings a couple new things with it.

Now onto Metoid. Metroid: Other M released for the Nintendo Wii not too long ago with some rather ‘meh’ review scores. Many complained about the idiotic way of which you gain your powers or rather how you are allowed to use them. Many thought Samus’ new voice was a large problem as silent protagonists often don’t lend well to a voice unless used sparingly (see all Halo protagonists). The mix between 3d and 2d was mixed for some and may not have felt very smooth. Overall the game was an experiment if anything and shows that all Metroid fans would rather play a good old classic 2D Metroid or a lovely version of Metroid Prime.

I was in debate about where to put this one but I’m doing Reboot because this franchise doesn’t know what it wants to do. Sonic the Hedgehog. Some of you may have just grimaced a little at the mention of that. Sonic is a rather sensitive subject for old school gamers. Many of us remember the unrequited joy we felt as we watched Sonic run through loops at a speed then unparalleled. Sonic has hit some very rough spots for the past… decade or so… Sonic the Hedgehog 4:Episode 1 hit, well, damn near everything not too long ago and Sonic Colors is being produced for the Nintendo Wii. I played the demo for Sonic 4 and I disliked it because of the new physics engine. It is not the same as the classis Genesis version which is what I was expecting and I was disappointed by it. Sonic Colors’ gimmick are little power-ups that transform you/allow you to do some small feat to get you through the level. Some people have said it feels very good and works like a “real” Sonic game but I’ll see it when I believe it. Sega needs to decide what the hell Sonic’s future will be because all the older gamers are just plain avoiding this topic and the young’uns will wonder why the hell they paid good money for those games in about 6 years.

Now for some Major Changes in games. First and foremost is the juggernaut known as World of Warcraft. WoW is nearly synonymous with MMOs nowadays because Activision-Blizzard has created the stereotype of the typical MMORPG. Cataclysm is set to hit shelves everywhere in not too long and I for one am very excited. Bliz released a patch for the game recently that changed, well almost everything which is an exciting concept to me. I’m very pleased with the changes I read for my Holy Paladin and honestly, I’m gonna have some low college grades because of WoW. Blizzard appears to be putting some significant effort into their juggernaut to keep it still fresh and simply make it fun. It wasn’t before and quests have recently gotten much looser and allowed players to just enjoy what they are doing in the game.

With WoW changing Guildwars of course couldn’t stay the same. I don’t know much about it so I’ll only comment briefly on it.  Guildwars 2 is on the way which is a strange idea in and of it’s own right. To release a sequel to an MMO is nearly unheard of and must mean some major overhauls are on the way. According to my friend who does play it, he says that they are trying to implement a new XP system. To counteract the massive amount of grinding that MMOs like WoW force you to do, Guildwars 2 is supposed to have a set amount of XP to gain for every level. It takes the same amount of XP to level from 1-2 as it does from 7-8. The idea seems like it could be very problematic but if implemented correctly, it could be the greatest success MMOs have seen in quite some time.

Now onto Experimentation.

Many companies are beginning to experiment and see just what boundaries they can push. The first one that comes to mind is of course, Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright. The very idea of those two games coming together to make a single one is mind-blowing. Both game series have been given praise for what they bring to the table and mixing the two seems like the greatest idea ever. It’s a brilliant thing to mix two great games but the gameplay will have to be flawless for this game to succeed. This game can honestly decide the boundaries of crossovers for the next decade or more if it flops or not.

Nintendo is trying to use a defib unit on a franchise that lives on in the hearts of many but is often forgotten. Donkey Kong Country Returns is reaching the end stages of development and touched many a soft spot in the community of gamers who grew up with it. The game is going back to good ol’ 2.5 side scrolling with all the classics that made it so lovable in the first place bar one very important part: no K. Rool and his minions. Those characters are all property of Rare and well they haven’t done so well in recent years. Nintendo could technically use them but have decided against it meaning all new baddies for DK and Diddy to face. The features from newer DK games have been added such as Diddy’s jet pack. The game looks like it will turn out well but if it flunks, it could drop hard and just be a horrible mess.

The Nintendo 3DS is coming out in the upcoming year and it promises so much but will it deliver? The power in the handheld is pretty impressive all things considered but at $300 it could seriously hurt a video game enthusiast’s wallet. The 3DS is supposed to have 3D effects without the need of goggles due to some fancy tricks by Nintendo. The line up is arguable the strongest of any game console ever packing games such as a remake of the N64 era Legend of Zelda games, SSFIV and others. No doubt millions will still get this thing very early on but how hard will it rock the gaming dollars? If/when Nintendo finds a way to put movies onto cartridges, they may change media as we know it.

There’s even more things I could go off of but I will end with this: Change is the scariest thing in all of gaming. Yes we always ask for something new, something original, something we’ve never seen before but let’s ask ourselves: how much change do we want? People are beginning to complain about the endless array of shooters and that all MMOs are the same but what do we really want? Call of Duty: Black Ops will still sell amazingly well as will every Halo game that 343 Industries produces in the years to come. Shooters simply sell well as a fact but we always complain about them anyway. Many say that MMOs are all the same damn thing but look at APB. Yes the game had inherent flaws but a lot of people just said “No” to it as a whole. I can guarantee you that WoW was just as broken in it’s early stages as was APB. It’s simply how MMOs work. And when an MMO falls, it falls with the thud of a giant. They cost exorbitant amounts of money and if they do poorly say goodbye to the people that produced it because that studio/company will have no money left.

So what is it that we want? We want creativity but we also want an expansion on what we know already. Let’s try some MMOs that aren’t RPGs. How about that Pokemon MMO that would sell like crazy? How about a war simulator MMOFPS? How about something crazy like a Platforming MMO? What about making a Legend of Zelda game with a dark storyline, all orchestral music, and a bit futuristic? There are so many things for this industry to build off but the directions are so endless it’s impossible to really decide what to do.

I love our industry, I really do but times are a changing and I’m both worried and excited for where it’s going. If stuff like Kinnect and Move flop or games like Okami and No More Heroes continue to do ‘meh’ in sales, we could be in major trouble. On the other hand, if we start buying lovely new titles like Shadows of the DAMNED and Enslaved: Odyssey to the West then we could really see some amazing things in the near future.

Trust me, it gets good

Afrodisiac39x here and I’m going to do a bit of commentary instead of a review.

I was just listening to Talkradar, my only and favorite podcast, and they talked about Metroid: Other M and I heard something that I’ve heard far too many times in the recent past.

“The second half is really good, like it just gets way better” or something very similar to that and honestly, I’m really tired of hearing that.

I’ve seen the trailers and screenshots and heard news about most games out there because I love the gaming community and the industry as a whole but that’s the third time I’ve heard that about a game in the past 4 months, and that’s counting summer. Summer is almost always a dry spell of games and to hear that for a third time is just plain infuriating.

At my school last year, me and a few other friends were raving about the release of Final Fantasy XIII on the xbox since none of us had PS3s. We all love Squenix’s work and we had all played a handful of Final Fantasy games in the past and XIII looked simply beautiful. I had been waiting for a really good single player game for a long time and it had looked like FFXIII was going to be my messiah (pardon the blasphemy). I was unbelievably disappointed by the game. It is definitively the most beautiful game on the market right now but good lord I hated at least 80% of the characters for 70% of the game and the combat is still very “meh” to me. It took me 20 hours to finally get to choose who is in my party despite having had them all around before. I specifically remember *SPOILER ALERT* having 4 people with me due to storyline but you can only have 3 people in combat. I was like, hey awesome I haven’t gotten to use Snow in a while, now he’s gonna kick everyone’s asses! And then the game decided “No, no, hold on a bit. He’s still not like, 100% better but he will be at the end of this chapter. You’ll use the other three until then.” I was pissed off by this. Why would you give me 4 characters and show them all in the panes and then tell me “We don’t want you to use this one”? It makes bloody no sense at all. After 10 chapters of having very minor character development and being forced to use certain characters I finally got to choose my own party. Twenty hours is way too long to wait to be given any choice in the matters of who I fight with. Then the next 3 chapters were very poorly done. At certain points it is very obvious that a chapter has ended and others I didn’t notice until I saved. The first and second chapters are completely indistinguishable from each other and so are the twelfth and thirteenth chapters. Chapter 11 was at least 8-10 hours long and then they just decided “wait shit everyone needs their summons. Plot hole filler time!” Fang got her Eidolon after about 3 hours in an area that was basically just a transition and literally right after you land on the planet, you get to fight for Hope’s. I don’t like having to fight 2 Eidolons right after another because then I don’t get a chance to try out to see which one I like better. Then near the end of the chapter, Vanille gets hers. So it takes 10 chapters to get Sazh, Snow, and Fang’s Eidolons but not even a single chapter to get the last three? That’s just poorly done. The 11th chapter was also shitlessly long. It could have easily been separated into three separate chapters. The first section would have been the giant transition to Gran Pulse, then the second section would have been finding the tower and beating it and the third would have been finding Fang and Vanille’s village and deciding to head back to the world where the others’ came from. Those are three very distinct sections but for some reason Square Enix decided they could just kinda mesh it all together. And at one point I saved and said “Wait, I’m on chapter 13 now? You mean those 12 steps I took just now made a difference in terms of chapter and yet those 11 hours I spent on Gran Pulse was a single chapter?”

The game isn’t awful by any means but the story and gameplay truly do not get decent until about 20 hours in. That’s just plain lazy development by Square Enix. I’ve also heard that Monster Hunter Tri does not get good until much later in the game and now Metroid: Other M is exactly the same. What is wrong with developers thinking we need 20 hours of handholding so we can get used to the controls before they put any conscientious effort into the game? I don’t want to sit in front of my TV addle-brained for 20 hours before I actually start enjoying the game, I want to jump in and get going.

Take Red Dead Redemption for example, that was a fantastic game. You jump and the first thing you do is go to hunt down your ex-gang member. You get shot and you learn the basic mechanics of the game through actually doing them. You start out shooting people, riding horses, being introduced to characters, being part of the bigger world that is New Austin and you get informed of the conflict throughout the game. You learn about the characters and their struggles sure, but you also get the story of the entire area of New Austin. In Final Fantasy you spend 20 hours watching cut scenes of your characters break down their fucking walls so they can connect and stop being pissy at each other. Then at that same point you’re told “Oh yeah so be-tee-dubs, you’re all gonna get killed by me because you need a main villain to fight and so that’s gonna be me, kthxbai.”

It just frustrates me when I see amazing potential in a game and then a game I hadn’t even looked at causes me to fall in love with it. Square Enix is known for A++ work in all of their games and Rockstar never cuts short either. FFXIII could have been so much better and I had originally thought RDR would be “just another sandbox game like GTA cept with horses” but it was so much more. RDR was full of life, you got to know everyone in that game, you learned about the struggles everyone had, you grew connected to John, he wasn’t a 2 dimensional character, he was a fully realized human being by the end of the game.

*MAJOR SPOILER ALERT*

Never have I been so moved by a video game than the apparent ending of RDR. When John gets shot down by the government in front of his own barn after finally having time to raise his son and reconnecting with him and having time to love his wife again, I felt genuinely sad. He was an anti-hero to the greatest extent of the word. Yeah he had a fucked up past but I do too. He redeems himself by hunting down his only three friends in the world just to save his family. He gets shot twenty times after doing exactly what he was told by the men who killed him just to make sure his family lived. His “Uncle” died and so did he right after he finally had his life right again then it’s just taken away from him. It was the most moving thing I’ve ever had to experience and I’ll never forget John Marston. I could always start a new game but I can never bring myself to do it. The game would be wonderful a second time through but I can literally not force myself to start a new game. I have to leave John dead otherwise the game will have less impact on me. I’ve accepted the fact that only Jack is left of the Marston family and the cruel, cruel irony that he has taken in his father’s footsteps despite everything John tried to prevent that. Jack has become a heroic outlaw like John but John wanted him to never be part of that world. I was gripped by the world and I forgot I had control the game very often. I just knew John had to fight for his family and that’s what drove my hands, not the game mechanics. As Jack I avenged John by shooting the man who killed him and then the game was over for me. A smile appeared on my face and I rode away triumphant after kicking his corpse into the river and rode back to the family house to see the three graves of the only people who ever meant anything to Jack.

Very rarely do we see such unbelievably gripping stories like RDR and I will always hold that game in high-esteem. It was always a good game, it was never bad, never slow, never convoluted by anything. I’ll never sell it, it’s in my cache of games that I love.

Point being, games can be done amazingly well without having to have a 20 hour intro to the game. I’m tired of hearing that crap because if RDR can be an open world game, made by the people who are known for having the opportunity to kill hookers in their games, that has the most moving story of any game I’ve ever played, then no game should ever have a bad storyline.

The Universal Scott Pilgrim

Hey everyone,

Afrodisiac39x here as you may know me in chat or Dillon if you’ve seen us lifecast a bit.

This is a review of Scott Pilgrim. I’m reviewing it all, book, movie and game. And an FYI, there will some spoilers but none will be too specific and I won’t pin moments to specific books. You have been warned

For those of you who don’t know, Scott Pilgrim is a book series made by Bryan Lee O’Malley. The story revolves around 23 year old Scott Pilgrim and his quest to defeat the 7 evil exes of Ramona Flowers, the girl he is dating. That’s the basic overarching plot of everything but all 3 diverge at certain points.

The book series is very in depth as it should be and the art style evolves as the books continue into the recognizable figures I know and love. Bryan Lee did a fantastic job with his series and the video game references are everywhere. Bosses (The 7 exes) explode into coins a la River City Ransom, items are mentioned by type such as the Mithril Skateboard a la most RPGs, etc. The books are hilarious and use the same logic as video games which isn’t saying much. Bryan Lee put a tremendous amount of effort into each book making every page beautiful and every single character lovable. Anyone who has taken any part of the series will back me up when I say Wallace Wells is one of the funniest people in the series, no one can forget lovable Young Neil and his naiveté and especially not little Knives Chau (yes it is pronounced as the eating utensil) whose insanity knows no bounds.

Scott Pilgrim the book series is wonderfully realized and developed with great attention to detail and all 7 exes are memorable for their own traits and is a must read for all video game lovers. A refreshing graphic novel series that will surely be remembered for the ages.

9.5/10

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World the movie is a film produced by Universal Studios and made by the same people who brought you the hilarious Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead. Michael Cera plays the main role of Scott Pilgrim which will already draw some people to this film. The film starts off by following the 1st book almost to the punctuation and not a single detailed is skipped. However, the movie was not nearly perfect. After the first ex, the movie begins to diverge away from the books. The second ex fight is significantly longer than the book fight and many character development sections are skipped. Scott’s experiences with Knives are a bit longer and the ex fights are either rushed or too long for certain ones. (I won’t say who but let’s just say that the movie should have been longer). Nevertheless, the movie is still wonderfully made. The cast could hardly have been chosen any better. Young Neil is still as subtly humourous as ever, Michael Cera pulls off a good Scott Pilgrim, Wallace is arguably funnier than he is in the book (nah but he’s pretty good), Knives’ insanity is fully realized, the exes look like they are ripped out of the comics and fleshed out and of course the subspace areas little references are abound (Scott’s hit count is still shown, Power of Love sword, etc). The movie is not perfect by my standards but I love the books so I can’t really expect it to be perfect. The movie is under 2 hours so I can understand why it had to be that way but each ex battle deserved to be treated a bit better and two Scott Pilgrim movies would have served much better so that the characters could have been developed further.

Bottom point: if you love the books, you’ll enjoy the movie even if you wished a few things had been done different. Hell go see for Michael Cera alone just to support it or to make me happy.

8.7/10

Scott Pilgrim vs the World:The Game is a game developed by Ubisoft, known for Assassin’s Creed. In the game you can play as Scott Pilgrim, Kim Pine, Ramona Flowers or Stephen Stills as you play through 7 levels defeating the 7 evil exes to win over Ramona’s heart. You can play alone or with a total of 4 people in local play (online to be patched in) but the number of enemies will scale to the people so 4 players can cause overwhelming amounts of enemies at times. The game is a classic style beat em up reminiscent of River City Ransom or my favorite Streets of Rage. You’ll run through the levels beating up every manner of enemy and collecting every coin they drop while utilizing whatever skills and items you may find. There is a level up system which will unlock new techniques and make fighting more than a simple mash of X and Y buttons. Each character plays slightly differently than the next but no one character is necessarily the best. The game puts in as much stuff as it possibly can from the game and has the most amazing soundtrack ever thanks to Anamanguchi’s amazing talent. You’ll see characters you forgot existed from the books and you’ll really see every character’s personality come out whether it be an ex or even your character. The bosses are all very fun to fight and pull their attacks straight out of the comics. The levels and difficulty could throw people off though. No level is more than 20 minutes and most are much less than that but if your character (or your friend/s and you) are not high enough level or have too low of stats, you may get slapped around a lot. I found myself able to play on Rough and Tough (normal) with a few problems but even Average Joe (easy) can bitch slap you pretty hard. There are a total of 5 endings depending on who you play as and 4 stats to work up. Knives will come in and assist you if you so wish her to and everyone has a different Knives assist each to differing uses. There are 12 achievements/trophies to collect and only one is particularly difficult. But no game is perfect unfortunately.

I personally found the controls to be a bit awkward at first and had it took me a while to really adjust to it smoothly. Also the difficulties become almost pointless if you have a character with perfect 100s across the board. The difficulty only changes how many seconds more you spend fighting. Also no online play will throw off a lot of people but I didn’t find it to be that bad. The shortness may also throw people off as you can run through the campaign alone or with friends rather quickly with decently leveled characters.

It is no doubt a fantastic game though with many tributes to the olden days of 16 bit and 8 bit graphics. The soundtrack may make you cry or pee yourself  out of pure joy and there are, of course, 2 extra modes and a handful of cheat codes to make your experience awesome, just like the good ol days.

If you’re looking for a game to play with friends or a beat em up to make you remember your childhood, play this wonderful little game. It’s got decent replay and is tons of fun especially if you read the books.

9.4/10

You probably noticed that the game was the longest but that’s because we are a gaming cast and I feel that was the most important. I highly suggest you all at the very least read the first book and see how you feel. The series is wonderful and refreshing and is the definitive bridge between comics and the video game community. Also I love it all. Once the online patch comes out (or so I’m told it will) I’d love to play with a few of you. Also DLC is planned for the game along with the 6th character.

Until next time,

Afrodisiac39x
